15 reasons recruiters deserve respect
Agency recruitment is a tough gig.
The highs can be high, but the lows are very low and come more often.
We tend to be measured on hard results, which come down to people placed and dollars earned.
Of course, these things are critical.
But the reality of agency recruitment is that sometimes you can do just as good work this quarter as you did last quarter – but get 25% of the success!
That’s hard to take
Recruiters face a lot of criticism and plenty of scrutiny (some of it from me), but the thing I know, and you know, but so many outside recruitment do not know, is this;
You do many small things that help and mean so much.
Small actions that go largely unnoticed and never get measured or rewarded.
You encourage, advise, counsel, mentor, support, and coach.
Let me count just a few of the ways. You will think of many more:
- The candidate whose resume and LinkedIn profile you help improve.
- The candidate you prepared for the interview and coached on interview performance
- The problematic but true feedback you give candidates after an interview has gone wrong.
- The candidate you calmly advised on an inflated salary expectation.
- The candidate you gently mentored on a salary aspiration that was below market.
- The empathetic and supportive way you told a candidate about missing out on a dream job.
- The calm reassurance you brought to the candidate who has unexpectedly lost her job
- The client who you subtly helped improve their own interview performance
- The client you worked with to calibrate their candidate expectations to align with the market
- The unsuitable candidate you helped during the screening call to re-focus their approach and their target job
- The candidate with visa issues that you counselled and guided.
- The newly unemployed candidate who you reassured and got the temp job that gave them confidence and set them back on the road
- The freshly arrived immigrant you helped into their first role even though it was not easy.
- The career advice and guidance you have given so many candidates over the years
So be proud, my recruiting friends.
You do so much good every day. Even if it is not a placement day.
Celebrate the small things you routinely do because the reality is this.
It may not translate into dollars, and you may not get any recognition, but you do helpful and meaningful things for people daily.
And in many cases, although the action is small, the impact is huge
Being a recruiter rocks!
