You will not succeed without this
It is assessed when any recruiter is hired.
It is discussed in every review of recruiter potential.
It is lauded when success is sustained. And blamed for failure.
It’s a core requirement to thrive in our profession and maybe succeed in modern life.
Resilience.
But what does ‘resilience’ really mean in the context of Recruitment?
Old school recruiters thrived on the cult of toughness. “Make 100 calls and get 100 rejections but keep going because the 101st will be successful” was the mantra.
And even today, resilience is often defined as some version of ego strength and an almost mythical ‘macho’ quality to ‘never give up’.
Well, I don’t see it that way.
Recruitment is an exceptionally demanding profession; to me, showing your frustration is totally human. I’m completely fine with the odd tear, swearword, or walk around the block, to diffuse the many disappointments that will come your way.
It’s not weak to show your emotions when you really care about the outcome of your efforts. In fact, it would be weird not to!
Resilience in Recruitment means de-powering what you can’t control and owning your own response to the situation.
I consider real resilience to be summed up by what is almost certainly not an English word.(Coined by a UK soccer coach, I believe)
“Bouncebackability”.
The recruiter who has had a shocking day with three offers turned down, candidates bombing out of interviews, and clients being rude, does not allow that negativity to affect their next interaction.
When faced with a new conversation with a client, candidate, or colleague, they allow no trace of those disappointments to contaminate the fresh engagement.
They bounce back and tackle each new situation unhindered by the previous disappointments.
That is real resilience.
Being able to recover fast from disappointment and not allowing any stakeholder to sense you are dragging your wasted emotion into their life.
So easy to say. So hard to do.
(But it’s not rocket science. LOL)
