You must dodge the ‘Recruiter Iceberg’
We all want to be successful.
And most people who enter recruitment are ambitious and driven.
It is also true that modern life encourages many to seek (and expect) instant gratification.
We want it all, now!
Well, recruitment will not give you that. Worse still, recruitment might taunt you with some early success and then smash you with lengthy periods in the doldrums.
This is exacerbated by the mindlessly banal observation that ‘recruitment is not rocket science’, which leads many recruiters to expect quick and relatively easy results. Recruitment is clearly not rocket science, but it is most definitely not easy.
Many recruiters who had a strong 24 months post-COVID need help understanding where that success went. The truth is your skills foundation needs to be stronger to cope with a changing market.
Strangely enough, we can look to the iceberg for a lesson on recruitment success. What do we know about looking at an iceberg? Most of it is hidden. The part under the water, the unseen part, supports and holds up the part you can see. And 90% of an iceberg is underwater!
When you see a highly successful recruiter who seems to sail through life with everything falling into place, don’t believe that for one second.
It took work and sacrifice to get there!
Have a look at the illustration.

The Recruitment Iceberg
You see success, self-esteem, money, and status. You note the loyal clients and happy candidates.
But really, what you need to look at to understand that recruiter is the journey – what went before, the 90%?
The rejection. The long hours. The fear. The hard work. The courage. The sacrifices. The focus on activity. The stress. The discipline. The huge learning curve. The many failures and disappointments.
Don’t focus on the part of the iceberg you can see. What you see there is the end game – the result.
Focus on the part you don’t immediately see. Then, replicate that behaviour.
Work on the part of your skills portfolio iceberg that is underwater.
