16 signs your clients don’t rate you

You call them ‘clients’, and you think they see you as a business partner.

But what do they think of you?

More to the point, do they ever think of you?

Take this quick test and maybe… think again!

Tick each statement that applies to you. Then add up your ‘Client Cred’ score.

1) They won’t meet you to provide a new job brief. It’s emailed or given over the phone, or maybe it’s just a few lines in an email. In the Covid world, even a Zoom meeting is ‘too hard for them. “Just send me candidates” is the message.

2) They give you jobs in competition with other Agencies. And you are not even first.

3) When you eventually arrange a meeting, they keep you waiting for ages or even stand you up altogether.

4) They don’t return your calls. Even though the job was ‘really, really urgent’.

5) They routinely don’t interview the candidates you present.

6) They won’t give you sound reasons for rejecting candidates that they have declined to interview.

7) They demand urgency from you every step of the way, but are slow to come back in a timely fashion themselves.

8) They don’t give you feedback on the candidates they interview from you.

9) They arrange second interviews with preferred candidates directly.

10) They ignore your advice on salary and conditions, flexibility, recruitment process, and… pretty much everything, actually!

11) They raise issues and information critical to the candidate’s hire (that they have never told you).

12) They make an offer directly to your candidate without going through you or telling you.

13) They haggle your fee after the deal is done.

14 ) They offer perm jobs to your temps without telling you.

15) They take forever to pay your invoice. Despite promises, they are ‘following up right now and it will be paid today’.

16) They flirt inappropriately or ask you out on a date.

Score yourself here.

Tick each statement that applies to you.

0-3 – Nice job, your clients, are treating you as a ‘partner.’

4-8 – More work is needed to elevate your status to ‘trusted advisor’.

9-16 – You don’t have clients. You have tyre-kickers.

What a great list. Now that it's in writing, it will be harder to ignore these signs of a client who is not a partner. Interestingly hard work and even a good placement don't always mean this kind of client will ever become a true business partner.

Number (2) is now the normal due to the tight market. Difficult to overcome as "Clients" think the more agencies/recruiters they give the job to the more chance they have of filling it. As Katherine above notes 'hard work and a good placement' is still not enough for some so called clients. Any ideas how to overcome this Greg?

It's not 'normal' at all. It's abnormal and dysfunctional. Only recruiters who lack credibility and don't know how to sell their value end up in this position. Why you would take on jobs in competition in a talent tight market, when you have access to talent, beggars belief. Most of my clients have used post covid skills shortages to move to full exclusivity or retainers. My blog is full of advice on this. At least five detailed articles. So is my book. So is the Savage Recruitment Academy. Step by step advice on how to address this issue. I can do no more :)
