You need a recruiting career boost?
When I wrote ‘The Savage Truth’, I was nervous
Could I do it?
I was intimidated by an empty word document, and 40 years of recruiting history to convey.
Would it be any good? Yes, I write blogs, but who was I taking on this endeavour?
I have a very supportive publisher who seemed confident, but she had made a blunder on this one, surely?
Who would read it? Do people even read books anymore?
At that time, selling 100 copies seemed like an improbable dream.
My confidence was not bolstered when anyone found out I was writing a book.
“No one will read that!”, I was told. “Lucky if you sell 50 copies”, said one blunt observer.
“What have you got you to say that anyone would read”, said a close friend (ouch, mate!).
“Make sure your Mum buys a few copies”, smiled another. “That should double your sales”. He was kidding. Sort of.
So, three years later, I am grateful to have sold close to 10,000 Savage Truth books.
In the world of business books, I am told that’s a pretty good result. As far as Recruitment books go, it is rare. Maybe unique.
It continues to sell at a steady clip every month. It’s not ‘Harry Potter’ obviously, but there are three or four Savage books sold every day somewhere in the world, pretty much.
All that is just numbers, however.
What made it all worthwhile was the feedback that the book is helping people. Changing perceptions. Enhancing skills and offering motivation.
People write to me every week about the book, and I am deeply grateful. Some post positive reviews on LinkedIn, and that is wonderful too.
So, thank you, Ross Clennett and Lesley Horsburgh, for nagging me till I wrote it. Thank you, Lesley Williams, for publishing the book and having faith and giving advice. Thank you to the 10,000 recruiters and leaders who bought a copy.
It’s still available now, of course (at discounted rates), so please consider getting a copy here. Maybe for a recruiter colleague or friend?
