Hiring? Read this. Now. Please.

A short note to anyone involved in hiring;

It’s no longer about you ‘choosing them’.

It’s much more about ‘them choosing you’.

So, the question is – are you all ready for that?

Your hiring process, your interview process, your EVP explanation, your authentic corporate ethos, your salaries, benefits, work-style flexibility and learning opportunities.

Because that is how they will judge you.

These comments have severe ramifications for third-party recruiters too, as you go about pitching jobs to candidates, managing the match and coordinating the logistics of a potential hire.

The reality is, if we want to hire quality talent, we need to:

  • Move much faster.
  • Reduce the steps in the hiring process
  • Work much harder to understand their ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors.
  • Be much more flexible in terms of working arrangements.
  • Be better interviewers and ‘slower to understand’ – what the candidate wants, that is.
  • Be articulate in explaining how our vacant role meets their needs.
  • Be prepared to give authentic answers on culture, management style, learning opportunities and much more.
  • Be in tune with a shift in candidate motivation. it is not just salary and a corner office anymore. It’s nuanced, complex and particular to the individual.
  • Take advice from trusted agency recruiters who are at the sharp end and know (or should know) what candidates are thinking.

In a skills-short market where so many are trying to hire, what I suggest here is a straightforward intellectual concept to grasp. Most do.

We must sell ourselves, our company, and our vacant roles.

But my observation is that many have been slow to shift behaviours during the hiring process, despite how ‘obvious’ the need to do so.

There is a lingering sense of ‘they should be grateful to work here’.

Many of us are stuck in a paradigm of the past

I strongly encourage you to re-invent how you view the power dynamic in hiring now, or you will likely count the cost sooner than later.

Another insightful blog Greg. When I was in agency land I was constantly surprised by comments from clients about how much better the agency was at filling roles than their internal team. It occurred to me that this wasn't just a sourcing issue. Internal teams and line managers largely saw recruitment as an admin function, pushing candidates through a hiring process whereas agency saw it as a sales role selling the job to the candidate and the candidate to the hiring manager.

This is exactly right. Something I try to ask clients I work with is, “why would a top candidate want to work for your company?” And “what are you prepared to do to secure top talent?” If they can’t answer those questions clearly and succinctly, then good luck.

spot on but been like this for years in my view. Anyone just coming to this realisation is a bit late to the party :-)
