I went to Dublin to talk ‘leadership’. And the craic was good!
I went to Ireland.
A huge week of recording 20 hours of recruitment training for the Social Talent Training Platform (Look out for that. Speak to Richard Bromhead)
But also two big presentations to the local recruiters on ‘Leadership’, and what that really means.
The first was organised by my good friends at Social Talent, and recruiters from Dublin and beyond came in droves, and the banter was good. Then the next day, an in-house talk to the management team at Morgan McKinley, a more receptive and hospitable bunch you cannot find anywhere, I can assure you.
I loved my week in Dublin. It was grand. In fact it was deadly.
Here is some of what I said, and the pictures show some of what I did!
- ‘Manager’ is what you have on your business card. ‘Leadership’ is how you influence attitude and behaviour.
- Managers have subordinates… Leaders have followers.
- Technology will be critical. But talent is the epicentre of competitive advantage.

Johnny Campbell, CEO Social Talent, introduces me to the Guinness/red-wine Dublin Combo
- Leadership can be learned. It can be improved.
- Why would anyone want to be led by you?
- What got you this far in your career, will not be enough to get you where you want to go!
- Your biggest competition is not your ‘competitor’, your clients or new technology. Your competition is you. You have to better than you were yesterday.

Drinks with Morgan McKinley
- No one is having sleepless nights about your career! The person who cares most about your career… is you. You own it.
- Enrol in a Nano-Degree. Now!
- Know 5% more than anyone else in the room.
- Embrace automation! Artificial Intelligence frees you up to do much better that which only you can do.

‘Leadership is Action’ with the recruiters of Ireland
- Your real value in the future will be your uniquely human skills . Selling, influencing, advising, mentoring, consulting, collaboration, creative thinking, problem-solving.
- Your managerial ‘authority’ lasts about as long as you are in the room, maybe. ‘Influence’ on the other hand, lasts forever.
- Leadership is action!
- Leaders are generally far more influential than they realise they are.
- Coaching is retention.
- Training is good. Coaching is better. Build ‘coaching’ into your corporate DNA.
- The measure of a good leader is the production of more leaders, not more followers.
- The standards you set are the behaviours you walk past.

The team at ‘Social Talent’. I got the ‘T’ shirt!
- How many of your current team would you re-hire?
- Brand you! What are you known for?
- We must become better in leading on the ‘why’. And not only on the ‘what’ and ‘how’.
- Transparency drives performance.

Fun times visiting Morgan McKinley
- Motivated teams have 10% too much to do.
- You can’t manage what you can’t measure.
- A business is never going to outpace its leader.
- People don’t leave companies. They leave leaders.
Thank you Social Talent. Thank you Morgan McKinley. Thank you Dublin.
