The global job market – what’s happening right now?

Today’s Savage Truth post is a little different, in two ways.

Firstly, it is in fact a Vlog, rather than a blog, and I encourage you to watch the video, focusing more on the content than the plain visage of your faithful blogger!

Secondly instead of a recruitment tip, I am focusing today on the global job market. Is it improving?

I travel a lot. Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and the UK just in the last 5 weeks, for example. And that gives me the privilege of speaking to CEOs and top HR people all over the world.

Watch the “Firebrand Sparks!” vlog for up to the minute assessment of the global job market in marketing, digital, creative, media and design.

Plain, perhaps, but honest, as my dad would say, especially about his own face. Thank you for this overview, Greg. Insightful as always.

    Good Vlog Greg.

I can certainly relate to the shortage of talent in the Java Development space and the tentative nature of candidates at the moment especially the good ones.
Talking to friends and ex colleagues back in London just makes me glad I am here in Australia.

    Thanks for the overview.

Hi, Thank you very much. This was great…however, whats your study of the market in the US and Canada ? Thanks Sameepa

      Thanks for the feedback Sameepa

My company, Firebrand, does not operate in North America. As I result I don’t have the insights and business operations to make comments about that market. Sorry

      Regards
      Greg

Agree with your comments on Europe Greg. The flip side is that many candidates have ‘the fear’ and are very wary of moving jobs at the moment. So we have clients wary of hiring and candidates wary of moving!

Greg: I do follow your updates regularly and yes I agree with you as I am very much on the road to hopefully seeking active recruitment through firebrand in Malaysia as we speak, having travelled a great deal across the middle east and europe and lived in Australia I have seen the trend to a downturn in the hiring sector. Talent acquisition and retention of the same is more or less the order of the day. Having worked in Design and Retail Environments in multi dollar companies within the sub-continent, i gather human resource is seeking talent from within the organization / scaling up profiles and adding more responsibility to the individuals Job Description.

look forward to more global insights from you.

    Best
    Mark

Chiming in from the US market, it’s very much a tale of two cities. Talent – particularly technical – is in high demand in markets like Boston/ Cambridge, NYC, Silicon Valley/ San Francisco. That said, in the middle of the country, southeast, southwest, where there’s been more agribusiness and manufacturing traditionally, it’s much slower. There’s a clear digital divide opening up, with an acceleration in wealth/ salaries on one direction, and a depression in the same for those who lack the skills needed by the new economy.
